Florida Electrician License Fees: Renewal and Dates

Every figure here comes from the board's own pages, the statute that caps them, or a county's published application. Florida renews on a two year cycle that ends on August 31 of each even numbered year.

Application fees are not refundable. Section 489.509 adds that the examination fee is refundable if the applicant turns out to be ineligible, while the application fee is not.

Transfers, reactivation and letters

The renewal date

Certificates and registrations renew every two years, and licenses expire on August 31 of every even numbered year. That's one date for the whole profession, not an anniversary of your own license.

Two things have to be done before the deadline, in the board's own order: finish the continuing education, then pay the renewal fee. Section 489.517 sets the biennial cycle and the continuing education hours behind it.

What renewal costs

Inactive status is a real option if you're out of the trade for a cycle, and the statute caps inactive renewal at $50 per renewal period, which is one of several places where the ceiling and the current fee are close.

The ceilings the statute sets

Section 489.509 caps what the board may charge. Initial application and examination for electrical contractors may not exceed $400. Initial application for registration may not exceed $150. Alarm system contractor certification may not exceed $400.

Biennial renewal may not exceed $400 for certificate holders, $200 for registrants and $450 for alarm system contractors. The delinquency fee may not exceed $50, transfers may not exceed $200, reactivation may not exceed $50 and a temporary alarm system contractor certificate may not exceed $75.

Rule chapter 61G6-8 holds the fee rule itself, 61G6-8.001, effective 8/28/2022.

What the counties charge

A county journeyman card is a separate bill, and the counties set their own.

Budgeting the whole thing

For the certified route, the state side alone is $263.25 to apply, $123.75 to sit and $296.00 for the license, so $683.00 before books, courses or a retake.

For the registered route, the county card comes first at its own price, then $151.00 for the state license and $25.00 per extra county.

Then it is $296 or $121 every two years, plus the continuing education. Miss the date and the delinquent fee adds $25.00.

Questions people ask

When do Florida electrical licenses expire?

August 31 of every even numbered year. The cycle is biennial for both certificate holders and registrants, and both the continuing education and the fee have to be in before that date.

How much is a Florida electrical contractor license renewal?

$296 for a certified license on active status and $121 for a registered one, or $51 for either on inactive status. A delinquent license carries a $25.00 fee.

How much does the Florida electrical contractor exam cost?

The certified examination application to DBPR is $263.25 and the computer based exam fee to the vendor is $123.75. A retake is $67.25.

Are DBPR application fees refundable?

No. The board states that application fees are non refundable. Section 489.509 says the examination fee is refundable if the applicant is found ineligible, but the application fee is not.

What does it cost to add another county to a registered license?

$25.00 for the additional county registration, beyond the local competency card that county requires. The registered license itself is $151.00 to start.

What do the county journeyman cards cost?

Broward charges $225.00 to apply and $120.00 to renew, Palm Beach $100.00 in total, Pinellas $75.00, and Hillsborough $50 to start plus $100 on acceptance and a $70 registration. Jacksonville publishes ranges of $10 to $75 to apply and $65 to $150 to test.
