Florida Utility Line Electrical Exam: Format and Books
Utility Line Electrical is the specialty for line work, class code 068. The paper is 100 questions over five hours, open book, 75 percent, and it's the one area whose reference list carries the National Electrical Safety Code.

What the scope covers
The board lists utility line electrical specialist as class code 068 among its specialty contractor categories, and the Know Your Scope chart names Utility Line Specialty as a certified scope. The registered ET license covers utility line work inside one jurisdiction.
The paper itself
100 questions. Five hours. Open book. The vendor codes it UL. The pass mark is 75 percent, a passing score is good for three years, and the 50 question business paper applies.
Two different codes, and they aren't the same book
This is the one area where the reference list carries the National Electrical Safety Code, IEEE C2-2017, listed as RN33 and marked UL only. The 2023 edition of the NESC is scheduled to take over on August 21, 2027.
The National Electrical Code, NFPA 70, 2023 edition, is a separate book listed as RN9. They cover different territory and a question written for one won't be answered out of the other. Know which one you're being asked about before you start turning pages.
The Lineman's and Cableman's Handbook, thirteenth edition 2017, from McGraw-Hill, is listed as RN35 for this area, with a 2023 edition scheduled for August 21, 2027.
The rest of the list
The OSHA volume, Code of Federal Regulations Title 29, July 2020 MANCOMM printing, is RN7 and applies to every area. The Florida Contractors Manual 2021 is RN50, also every area, with a bound PDF index permitted.
The list also carries the dates future editions take over. The 2026 National Electrical Code is scheduled to become the reference edition on August 21, 2027, and several of the other books move on the same date.
Money and booking
The certified examination application to the department is $263.25. The computer based exam fee paid to the vendor is $123.75. A retake is $67.25. The board's page says application fees are not refundable.
Pearson VUE runs the paper for the department. It's computer based and the department's page says it's available on a daily basis at testing sites, so you're picking a date rather than waiting for a sitting. You become eligible to schedule within 72 hours after your application is approved.
Book by phone on 888.204.6230 or online through the vendor's Florida page. The booklet asks you to call at least five business days before the date you want.
How to prepare for it
Three books, three tab sets, and a habit of deciding which book owns a question before you open anything. That decision is worth more time on this paper than on any other area.
Our free question sets are written on the National Electrical Code, not on the safety code, so use them for the NEC half only. The practice hub says which sets carry a section number that changed between the 2023 and 2026 editions.
