Orlando FL Electrician License: Classes and State Rules

Orange County is the simple case: no county journeyman card, no county contractor certificate, just the state license and a city registration before you pull permits. Here's how that works and where to train.

The license an Orlando electrician needs

The license Florida issues is a contractor license from the Electrical Contractors' Licensing Board, certified for the whole state or registered for one jurisdiction. While you work for somebody who holds one, s. 489.503 covers you as an employee inside their scope.

The county's Division of Building Safety page describes plan review, building permits, inspections, code enforcement and certificates of occupancy. It runs a licensed contractor search of its own and tells you to use the DBPR database to verify a Florida state license. We did not find a county journeyman card or competency certificate program described on that page, so ask before you assume: contractor licensing questions go to 407-836-5550.

Permits and city registration

Orange County electrical permits are pulled by a licensed contractor or by a homeowner who completes an owner builder disclosure statement, through the county's Fast Track system. Only a licensed contractor may give power of attorney to an agent.

The City of Orlando issues no electrician license either. It registers contractors: state certified contractors file a copy of the DBPR certification, state registered contractors post a surety bond of at least $5,000, and limited specialty contractors post a bond of at least $1,000. Everybody needs a current business tax receipt from a Florida city or county and proof of workers compensation insurance or an exemption.

What that means for a journeyman

We found no Orange County card program described on the Division of Building Safety page, so plan on your level being proved by your program and your employer rather than by a county certificate, and call the division if you need that settled.

A card from elsewhere in Florida does carry. Section 489.5335 means one earned in another Florida county has to be recognized here, and it becomes the base for a registered state license in the jurisdiction that issued it.

• Electrical Training Alliance of Central Florida, also listed as the Central Florida Electrical JATC, 2738 Forsyth Road, Winter Park, FL 32792, (407) 678-3733, open Monday to Thursday from 6:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and closed for lunch from 11:00 to 12:00.
• Its how to apply page asks applicants to be 17 or older with a high school diploma or GED and one year of algebra with a passing grade, plus picture ID, Social Security card, birth certificate and official transcripts. There's a validated aptitude exam covering math and reading with a pass or fail result inside 24 hours, a missed test means a six month wait, interviews are monthly, selection is by ranking score and candidates stay on the list for two years.
• Florida Electrical Apprenticeship and Training (FEAT), 2900 W. Oak Ridge Road, Building 1600, Orlando, 407-438-3328. FEAT describes apprenticeship as work for a participating FEAT electrical contractor plus classroom instruction covering theory, code and the technical side of the trade.
• Orange Technical College electrician apprenticeship, sponsored by FEAT, at the East Campus on Lokanotosa Trail, the South Campus on W Oak Ridge Road and the West Campus in Ocoee. Four years and 8,000 hours, apprentices employed by a participating employer, in a program registered with the United States Department of Labor and the Florida Department of Education, with college credit at Valencia College on completion.
• ABC Central Florida, 651 Danville Drive, Orlando, partners with training providers across several trades including electrical. Its page prints no hours, requirements or cost.

The state exam and where you sit it

The state exams run through Pearson VUE as computer based tests. DBPR says candidates can schedule within 72 hours after approval, by phone or through the Florida electrical program page.

Pearson VUE does not publish a static list of Florida centers for this program. Seats are found through the program test center locator, and the candidate information booklet points candidates the same way, so we're not printing an address we could not confirm.

O*NET, republishing Bureau of Labor Statistics 2025 wage data, gives electricians in the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford metro area a median of $24.43 an hour, or $50,820 a year.
