Florida Sign Specialty Electrical Exam: 100 Questions

Sign Specialty Electrical is the paper behind the electrical advertising sign scope. It's 100 questions over five hours, open book, and the reference list adds sign structures, neon and concrete titles that no other area carries.

What the scope covers

The board lists electrical advertising signs as class code 067 among its specialty contractor categories, and the Know Your Scope chart names Sign Specialty as a certified scope. The registered ET license covers sign work inside one jurisdiction.

Rule chapter 61G6-7 holds the specialty electrical contractor rules. Rule 61G6-7.001 carries an effective date of 25 September 2024.

The paper itself

100 questions. Five hours. Open book. The vendor codes it SS. The pass mark is 75 percent, a passing score stays good for three years, and the 50 question business paper applies here too.

The books for this area

The approved list marks these for SS:

• Engineering Sign Structures, An Introduction to Analysis and Design, 1998, from Brown Technical Books, listed as RN23.
• NEON, Techniques and Handling, fourth edition 1997, from Brown Technical Books, listed as RN25.
• Design and Control of Concrete Mixtures, sixteenth or seventeenth edition, from the Portland Cement Association, listed as RN28.
• NFPA 70, the 2023 National Electrical Code, as RN9, with the OSHA volume RN7 and the Florida Contractors Manual RN50 that apply to every area.

Three of those four are titles a working sign electrician may never have opened. Buy them early, because the sign structure and concrete material is where the questions go that experience alone doesn't answer.

The list also carries the dates future editions take over. The 2026 National Electrical Code is scheduled to become the reference edition on August 21, 2027, and several of the other books move on the same date.

The code side

The National Electrical Code keeps electric signs and outline lighting in Article 600, and that article number is the same in the 2023 book this exam uses and in the 2026 book our study material is written to. Out of state exams that reach this category

One record on the board's endorsement matrix lands here. A California C-45 qualifies for Electrical Sign Specialty, determined in March 2001 and November 2019.

The board has no reciprocal agreement with any state. It recognizes certain out of state examinations for licensure by endorsement, and that's a different thing.

Money and booking

The certified examination application to the department is $263.25. The computer based exam fee paid to the vendor is $123.75. A retake is $67.25. The board's page says application fees are not refundable.

Pearson VUE runs the paper for the department. It's computer based and the department's page says it's available on a daily basis at testing sites, so you're picking a date rather than waiting for a sitting. You become eligible to schedule within 72 hours after your application is approved.
